a Sicilian food + sailing adventure to the Eolian Islands

We will be sailing around the Eolian Islands off of the northeast coast of Sicily, not far from Mount Etna. Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi are a chain of Mediterranean islands that boast some of the best swimming, fresh seafood, and night life in Sicily. Weather and wind are always factors when you plan a sailing trip. Our well-seasoned captain knows this area like the back of his hand. We’ll follow his lead to plan the best route, and might make some changes to the itinerary to make sure we have time for a few stops among the islands, dinners and drinks off of the boat, and relaxing mornings/afternoons catching some sun and enjoying “la dolce vita” aboard our own private barca vela.

Sicily is world-famous for it’s incredible food and wine culture, but we are taking you off the beaten path to a very special volcanic oasis between Persephone’s island and Italy’s main boot. Menus will feature freshly-caught seafood, light pasta dishes with seasonal vegetables, natural and volcanic wines, and exceptional desserts like cannoli and granita! Chef Linda Sarris has organized this adventure and will be onboard along with her dear friend Alessandro Minaudo, a certified sailboat captain here in Italy. Linda will pair wines and keep the cheeky cocktails flowing through the week while she prepares family meals aboard when we are at sea.

5/25 Saturday - afternoon/evening on Lipari

5/26 Sunday - sail to Panarea

5/27 Monday - evening trekking on Stromboli

5/28 Tuesday - wine tasting on Salina

5/29 Wednesday - into the wild on Filicudi

5/30 Thursday - early sail to Vulcano + return to Capo d’Orlando

Santa Lucia is one of the most respected saints in Sicily. The legend says that on Saint Lucy's Day, a mysterious ship full of wheat arrived in the port of Palermo and saved the island from starvation. Saint Lucy's Day is also celebrated in Sweden with a candlelit winter solstice soirée with spiced sweets and warm boozey glögg.

The Feast of Santa Lucia

Linda Sarris + co-host Brett Zaccardi from streetattack have put together a multi-course Feast of Santa Lucia for this celebration of light.

olive harvest in sicily

mountains of Sambuca di Sicilia

mountains of Sambuca di Sicilia

This October, I will be working the olive harvest with some of my favorite wine makers in Sicily. We will pick and press every day for two weeks to make some of the best certified-organic extra virgin olive oil that comes out of Sicily.

I first met the Sicilian-German brothers Gunther + Klaus Di Giovanna in 2011 when I was traveling with a friend from Brooklyn. The restaurant Roberta's used to carry Di Giovanna wine and we decided to look up fellow (ex) New Yorker, Melissa Di Giovanna to organize a winery visit. We spent a few days with Melissa and Gunther, touring the winery, tasting olive oil, flirting with the locals, and visiting a fresh ricotta producer. We didn't want to leave! I've been back to the winery twice since the first visit and kept in touch with Melissa over the last 5 years. Last year, I visited the Di Giovanna property during vendemmia the wine harvest in September and catered a big private dinner in the town for the Mayor! che culo!

This year, finally, I'll be back in my beloved Sambuca di Sicilia for the olive harvest season in late October.

Stay tuned for updates! New Yorkers, get ready for some of the best italian biancolilla + nocellara del belice extra virgin olive oil to ever burn your throat, tickle your pallet, and gloss up your lips. Cheeky will be selling some of the 2016 harvest oil through the website next year so make sure you join the mailing list to reserve your bottles.

East Williamsburg's Plant House, Tula, Plans to Host Monthly Dinner Series

Ever wanted to sit down to a multi-course meal amid birds of paradise and succulents? Well, now's your chance.

Tula, the East Williamsburg plant and design house, will begin hosting monthly dinners as part of their "8 Guests" series. Set within the lush and foliage-filled showroom, each dinner will feature a local chef or restaurant who will prepare a multi-course meal to be paired with drinks for 10 people (including owners Christan Summers and Ivan Martinez). The cost per person is $75.

Linda Sarris, a private chef based in Brooklyn, will host the first dinner on Saturday August 27. The second dinner, scheduled for September 17, will be hosted by Williamsburg Japanese darling Okonomi.

Summers tells us the idea for a monthly dinner series was the product of a brainstorm with Tula ceramist Jordan Colon, who was previously chef-owner at Greenpoint's EAT (the shuttered cafe experimented with its own unique dinner series). In June, Tula began hosting “Late Night” sessions every other Thursday at their showroom, where they offer beer, wine and small bites from a local chef.

"[The late night sessions] have been going really well so we thought to try a sit-down experience, which are the dinners," says Summers.

Outside of traditional planting workshops and how-tos, Summers and Martinez have been dreaming up ways to draw people into their lush showroom. With their late night sessions already a hit and now a dinner series, they seem to be on the right path.

Summers adds, "we are not the average plant shop, and we look to support a healthy lifestyle by bringing community together over good food and green life."

"8 Guests," Saturday August 27. 7:30 pm hors d'oeuvres, 8 pm dinner. $75 per person. Tickets can be purchased here.
