Sicily Food & Wine Tour: an off the beaten path Italian adventure

Live like a local and experience #lifeinsicily during this all inclusive, off the beaten path, food/wine tour with chef Linda Sarris. Linda is a NYC-based private chef who splits her time between meal planning for her mover and shaker clients and olive harvesting on travels around Sicily to write her upcoming mini magazine, SNACK Sicily.  Her unparalleled love for Sicily, cooking, and her insider access to the best food and wine producers make her the perfect leader for exploring all the best things about Sicilian life, culture and cuisine.

On this culinary road trip, guests will source local products, then go back to the kitchen and learn how to make the most of these ingredients in their cooking.  Amazing day trips to favorite local spots, top restaurants and wineries, as well as a sommelier selection of wines with all meals round out the week. Western Sicily is the perfect place to experience true Sicilian life as a local and to immerse yourself in it’s rich culture.

ABOUT: CHEF LINDA SARRIS Raised in a big Greek-American family with a Chef grandfather and a fisherman dad, Linda has been in love with food her whole life. After the French Culinary Institute and a few stints in restaurants, Linda took off to sharpen her culinary skills in her own adventurous way - working on a farm-to-table cooking school and wine estate in Sicily, spending two summers as a private-chef in Tuscany, and traveling back to Sicily every year since to work the olive harvest.   In summer 2016, she spent two months in Sicily researching and gathering insider information on Sicilian food tourism, in preparation of her new venture, SNACKsicily, a printed mini magazine with down to earth recipes, interviews with her favorite local Sicilians, and the best tips for travelers.

ARROGANT SWINE, 173 Morgan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11206

$40 early-bird TICKETS before March 1st

Winter’s lingering chill won’t stand a chance.

Tyson Ho likes sausage. Joshua M. Bernstein and Chris Cuzme? They like beer. To combine two of life's greatest pleasures, the comrades-in-consumption are once again joining forces for the third edition of Winter's Grind at the Arrogant Swine, Ho's Bushwick-based BBQ joint.

Ho and his fellow chef friends will be hand-cranking all-you-can-eat sausages such as chicken satay, veal sausage with Pakistani fire seasoning and Sicilian lamb stigghiola. (Don't worry: vegetarians will have a dining option too.)

On the all-you-can-drink side, Cuzme and Bernstein have hand-selected 10 of the city's top homebrewers to make dark and delightful beers, including the crew from Bitter & Esters and Mary Izett's marvelously offbeat fast ferments. Moreover, they've tabbed 15 of NYC's best and newest breweries to supply drinkers with the finest March-friendly beers. That means you'll be drinking Finback, Other Half, Strong Rope, Keg & Lantern, Kings County Brewers Collective, Barrier and so many more. Around 25 unique, rarely tasted brews will be poured.

Santa Lucia is one of the most respected saints in Sicily. The legend says that on Saint Lucy's Day, a mysterious ship full of wheat arrived in the port of Palermo and saved the island from starvation. Saint Lucy's Day is also celebrated in Sweden with a candlelit winter solstice soirée with spiced sweets and warm boozey glögg.

The Feast of Santa Lucia

Linda Sarris + co-host Brett Zaccardi from streetattack have put together a multi-course Feast of Santa Lucia for this celebration of light.

olive harvest in sicily

mountains of Sambuca di Sicilia

mountains of Sambuca di Sicilia

This October, I will be working the olive harvest with some of my favorite wine makers in Sicily. We will pick and press every day for two weeks to make some of the best certified-organic extra virgin olive oil that comes out of Sicily.

I first met the Sicilian-German brothers Gunther + Klaus Di Giovanna in 2011 when I was traveling with a friend from Brooklyn. The restaurant Roberta's used to carry Di Giovanna wine and we decided to look up fellow (ex) New Yorker, Melissa Di Giovanna to organize a winery visit. We spent a few days with Melissa and Gunther, touring the winery, tasting olive oil, flirting with the locals, and visiting a fresh ricotta producer. We didn't want to leave! I've been back to the winery twice since the first visit and kept in touch with Melissa over the last 5 years. Last year, I visited the Di Giovanna property during vendemmia the wine harvest in September and catered a big private dinner in the town for the Mayor! che culo!

This year, finally, I'll be back in my beloved Sambuca di Sicilia for the olive harvest season in late October.

Stay tuned for updates! New Yorkers, get ready for some of the best italian biancolilla + nocellara del belice extra virgin olive oil to ever burn your throat, tickle your pallet, and gloss up your lips. Cheeky will be selling some of the 2016 harvest oil through the website next year so make sure you join the mailing list to reserve your bottles.

East Williamsburg's Plant House, Tula, Plans to Host Monthly Dinner Series

Ever wanted to sit down to a multi-course meal amid birds of paradise and succulents? Well, now's your chance.

Tula, the East Williamsburg plant and design house, will begin hosting monthly dinners as part of their "8 Guests" series. Set within the lush and foliage-filled showroom, each dinner will feature a local chef or restaurant who will prepare a multi-course meal to be paired with drinks for 10 people (including owners Christan Summers and Ivan Martinez). The cost per person is $75.

Linda Sarris, a private chef based in Brooklyn, will host the first dinner on Saturday August 27. The second dinner, scheduled for September 17, will be hosted by Williamsburg Japanese darling Okonomi.

Summers tells us the idea for a monthly dinner series was the product of a brainstorm with Tula ceramist Jordan Colon, who was previously chef-owner at Greenpoint's EAT (the shuttered cafe experimented with its own unique dinner series). In June, Tula began hosting “Late Night” sessions every other Thursday at their showroom, where they offer beer, wine and small bites from a local chef.

"[The late night sessions] have been going really well so we thought to try a sit-down experience, which are the dinners," says Summers.

Outside of traditional planting workshops and how-tos, Summers and Martinez have been dreaming up ways to draw people into their lush showroom. With their late night sessions already a hit and now a dinner series, they seem to be on the right path.

Summers adds, "we are not the average plant shop, and we look to support a healthy lifestyle by bringing community together over good food and green life."

"8 Guests," Saturday August 27. 7:30 pm hors d'oeuvres, 8 pm dinner. $75 per person. Tickets can be purchased here.
